Avignon with kids: 12 activities tested with children
Avignon with kids is doable and genuinely great — as long as you know where to go and how to pace it. Too many museums, not enough open air, and the grumbling starts. Here are 12 activities tested with our own kids and our friends’ (ages 4 to 14), with precise duration and budget.
First: three rules
- 3 activities max per day with kids. More than that and a meltdown is guaranteed.
- One half-day of culture (Palais, museum) + one half-day of movement (garden, island, bike).
- Stay inside the walls so you can come back to the apartment any time (nap, change, recharge).
The 4 essentials
1. The Palais des Papes with the junior HistoPad
Ages 8–14 · €12 adult / €10 child · 1h30–2h
The junior HistoPad (free, ask for it at the entrance) is built for kids: age-appropriate narration, treasure hunts, puzzles to solve in each room. Our 9-year-old talked about it for 3 months afterward.
For little ones (4–7): the visit is too long. Stick to the Palais terraces (visible from outside, free) plus the Jardin des Doms right next door.
2. The Pont d’Avignon
All ages · €5 adult / €4 child · 30–45 min
Short, fun, with a song everyone knows. Kids’ audio guide available. Tip: make them sing “Sur le pont d’Avignon” during the walk across — it’s the highlight for them.
3. The Jardin des Doms
All ages · Free · 1h–2h
The municipal park above the Palais des Papes. Guignol puppet theater (free, Wednesday and Sunday afternoons in summer), small pond with ducks and goldfish, playground, view over the Rhône.
Our favorite way to wind down after an intense morning of sightseeing.
4. Île de la Barthelasse
All ages · Petite Navette free · 2–4h
The island in the middle of the Rhône. You cross on the free ferry from the Quai de la Ligne (every 15–30 min, 5-min boat ride — already an attraction in itself).
On the island: huge lawns, the iconic Pont d’Avignon photo, bike rental at Provence Bike, Restaurant La Barthelasse (simple cooking, terrace, gentle prices).
Tip: picnic bought at the Halles in the morning, cross at 11 am, lunch at noon, back at 3 pm. Memorable.
Kid-specific activities
5. The Avignon tourist mini-train
Ages 3–10 · €9 adult / €5 child · 40 min
Narrated loop of the historic center on a small train. Touristy but kids love it (childhood has no shame). Departs from Place du Palais des Papes, runs April through October.
6. Collection Lambert — kids’ workshop
Ages 6–12 · €5 · 1h30 (workshop, booking required)
The contemporary art museum runs creative workshops every Wednesday afternoon: painting, sculpture, collage. Booking essential. The museum itself is short, but kids leave with their own creation.
7. Théâtre du Chien qui Fume — kids’ shows
Ages 3–12 · €10–12 · 45–60 min depending on show
Kids’ programming year-round (Wednesday 3 pm, Saturday-Sunday 11 am or 5 pm). Puppets, storytelling, object theater. Genuinely high quality — not the cheap pseudo-kids stuff.
For moving / fresh air
8. Cycling on Île de la Barthelasse
Ages 6+ · €12–18 half day · 2–4h
The island is flat, enclosed, car-free. Ideal for learning or wandering. Rent at Provence Bike on-site. Kids’ bikes available.
9. Mont Ventoux (driving to the summit)
Ages 6+ · Car needed · ½ day
An hour from Avignon, Mont Ventoux (1,909 m). Scenic road to the top (parking at the foot of the radar station). 360° view over Provence. Cool and windy even in midsummer (about 7 °C cooler than at the base). Avoid in winter (road closed).
10. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse — swimming
Ages 6+ · Free · ½ day + 35 min drive
The most beautiful natural site nearby: a karst spring (an underground river that gushes up to 100 m³/sec). Water is turquoise and freezing (10 °C!), swimming possible (water shoes essential, pebbly bottom). Magical for kids.
Pair with lunch at Philip (local trout, terrace right over the water).
For the palate and the belly
11. Avignon Halles market
All ages · Free · 1h
The Halles at Place Pie (Tue–Sun 6 am–1:30 pm). For kids: pick out their own cheese, sample the saucissons (Pelloquin always offers a slice), watch the fishmongers work (Albertini), eat lunch on the spot at the 10 prepared-food stalls (gnocchi, paella, sushi, crêpes — everyone finds their thing, €8–12).
12. La Cour des Saveurs confectionery
All ages · €4–8 · 30 min
On Place Crillon, Carpentras berlingot factory and candied fruits made on the spot (open window onto the workshop). Free tastings, producer prices. Sweet-tooth souvenir guaranteed.

Kid-friendly restaurants

- Restaurant des Halles: cooking right in front of you, pick your dish
- La Barthelasse (on the island): lawn terrace, outdoor games
Staying with kids inside the walls
A base inside the walls is essential so you can come back at 3 pm for a nap, recharge batteries, head out again at 5 pm. Our apartment Lavande Dorée (64 m², 2 bedrooms, flowered terrace) is ideal for 4 (2 adults + 2 children).
Crib on request. Changing corner in the bathroom. A little chalkboard of games for the evenings.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best activity in Avignon for kids? +
The Palais des Papes with the junior HistoPad (ages 8–12) is surprisingly great — augmented reality changes the visit completely. For little ones (4–8), the Jardin des Doms (puppet theater, duck pond) and Île de la Barthelasse are perfect.
Are there free activities for kids in Avignon? +
Yes: Jardin des Doms, Île de la Barthelasse via the free Petite Navette ferry, the Halles market, walking the ramparts, fountains in summer, the Parc des Sports.
Is Avignon stroller-friendly? +
The center inside the walls is mostly flat but cobbled. An all-terrain stroller or a baby carrier is more practical. Elevators up to the Palais and the Jardin des Doms exist.
Where can you swim near Avignon with kids? +
No beach in Avignon itself. The best options: Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (the Sorgue river, 35 min) for clear-water swimming, Lac du Paty (Caromb, 45 min) for a proper sandy beach, or the Pont du Gard (25 min) for swimming in the Gardon.
