Les Baux-de-Provence from Avignon: full guide 2026
Les Baux-de-Provence is one of the most iconic day trips from Avignon: a medieval hilltop village in the Alpilles, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, a spectacular fortified château, and — the showstopper — the Carrières de Lumières, former stone quarries transformed into an audiovisual cathedral. 45 minutes by car, it’s the perfect Provençal escape for a day.
In 30 seconds
- Distance from Avignon: 35 km, 45 min by car
- Village: Most Beautiful Villages of France, free pedestrian access
- Château: spectacular ruins, ~€11 entry (verify)
- Carrières de Lumières: immersive show, annual programming
- Our tip: early morning or late afternoon to dodge the groups
History & context
The rock of Les Baux has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages, the Baux family built one of the most powerful lordships of the south here — they claimed descent from the wise king Balthazar, and their coat of arms carries the 16-pointed star. In the 12th–13th century, their court rivaled that of the counts of Provence.
In 1632, Richelieu had the château dismantled for fear of rebellion: the ramparts were razed, the keep brought down. What remains today forms the visitable ruins, open to the sky on the rocky spur.
The name bauxite comes from the village: the aluminum ore was discovered here and named in 1821 by the geologist Pierre Berthier. The old quarries, worked until 1935, today house the Carrières de Lumières, which since 2012 project monumental artworks on the walls and floors (Van Gogh, Klimt, Cézanne, Picasso depending on the edition).

A host’s note
Our strategy for Les Baux: arrive at 9 am (before the buses), start with the château (soft light for photos, few people), then walk down into the village for a coffee, then on to the Carrières de Lumières around 11 am–noon (the underground coolness is welcome in summer). Have lunch in Maussane or Saint-Rémy rather than in the village (better value). On the way back, stop at an AOP olive-oil producer — it’s one of the most beautiful oils in France.
