Place de l'Horloge in Avignon: the complete 2026 guide

📅 February 5, 2026 ⏱ 6 min read ✍️ Damien 🏷 Place de l'Horloge · Avignon · City center

The Place de l’Horloge has been the historical and social heart of Avignon since the 14th century. Wedged between the Palais des Papes to the north and rue de la République to the south, it gathers in one space the Town Hall, the Opéra Grand Avignon, a Gothic clock tower and about fifteen café terraces. During the festival, this is where the city breathes.

In 30 seconds

  • Location: pedestrian center of Avignon, 200 m from the Palais des Papes
  • Access: free 24/7, fully pedestrian
  • Monuments: Town Hall (1845), Opera (1847), Clock Tower (14th c.)
  • Vibe: terraces, brasseries, carousels in summer, festival stage in July
  • Our take: a must-cross square, but not where we eat

History and context

The site of Place de l’Horloge corresponds to the Roman forum of Avenio, the ancient city. In the Middle Ages, it became the herb market square, then the consuls’ central square. The current Town Hall is neoclassical (1845), built by Léon Feuchère, but it preserves, attached to it, the 14th-century Gothic clock tower — the oldest element still visible, with its two jacquemarts that have struck the hours since 1471.

To the left of the Town Hall, the Opéra Grand Avignon (1847) echoes the classical facade in blond stone. It now programs ballet, opera, and symphonic concerts from October to June. During the Avignon Festival (July), the square becomes the OFF’s epicenter: flyers, costumed actors, impromptu performances, queues at every venue.

Why visit

  • Central landmark: you can’t move through the city without crossing it
  • Architectural cohesion: ordered 19th-century facades around a pedestrian square
  • Clock tower: one of the few civil Gothic remains in Avignon
  • Shaded terraces on the west side in the afternoon, sun on the east in the morning
  • Festival: for three weeks in July, theater spills out onto the street
  • Carousels and ice rink: family events in December and July–August
  • Natural link between the Palais des Papes (north) and the Halles (south)

Practical visit

  • Accessibility: flat, paved square, accessible to reduced mobility and strollers
  • Public toilets: 30 m away, behind the Town Hall (check the official site)
  • Free Wi-Fi: partial municipal coverage on the square

A host’s note

Avoid dinner on Place de l’Horloge — the menus here are touristy and overpriced for what you get. On the other hand, it’s perfect for apéro at 7 PM: order a glass of Côtes-du-Rhône, watch the Avignonnais walk home from work, then slip off to dinner at a real address on rue des Teinturiers or near the Halles. That’s our ritual when we host friends.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this square called Place de l'Horloge? +

The name comes from the 14th-century Gothic clock tower attached to the Town Hall. The original mechanism, still visible, houses two jacquemarts (moving figurines) that have struck the hours since 1471.

What are the best terraces on Place de l'Horloge? +

Terraces on the shaded side (facing the Town Hall) are the nicest in summer. Skip the purely tourist-trap spots: have apéro rather than dinner here, and head to rue des Teinturiers or the Halles when it's time to really eat.

Can you visit the Town Hall and the Opera? +

The Town Hall (1845) is partially open during Heritage Days (September). The Opéra Grand Avignon runs a lyric season from October to June — tickets at operagrandavignon.fr.

Is there a market on Place de l'Horloge? +

No food market (head to the Halles, 3 min away). But occasional antique fairs, book fairs and craft markets — schedule on avignon.fr.

What's the best time to enjoy the square? +

Late afternoon (5–7 PM) off-season, or late evening (10 PM+) in summer: tourists clear out, locals sit down, the atmosphere turns local.
