Jardin des Doms in Avignon: view, history, 2026 tips
The Jardin des Doms sits on the Rocher des Doms, the limestone promontory that dominates Avignon and is the reason humans have lived here since the Neolithic. It’s free, open to all, 2 minutes from the Palais des Papes, and offers the most beautiful view in town. If you could only do one thing on arrival, it should be this.

History and context
The Rocher des Doms rises 35 m above the Rhône. It’s the origin site of Avignon: a defensive spur occupied since the Neolithic. The name “Doms” comes from the Latin domus (the house, the cathedral) — this is where Notre-Dame des Doms stands, the 12th-century cathedral right next to the Palais des Papes.
The current garden was designed in the 19th century (1830–1860) in the English style — winding paths, romantic pond, bandstand. Before that, the top of the rock served as a papal vegetable garden, a cemetery, and a quarry. The conversion into a public park coincided with the Haussmannian craze for urban green spaces.
Why go
- The view: Pont d’Avignon below, the Rhône, Barthelasse island, sometimes Mont Ventoux

- Free: no barriers, no ticket booth
- Cool in summer: shade from century-old plane trees, breeze off the Rhône
- Families: playground, carp pond, big open spaces for kids
- Photography: the best spot to photograph the Pont Saint-Bénézet
- Connection: you can descend toward the Pont via the ramparts

A host’s note
Walk up to the Jardin des Doms at 7 PM in summer, with a water bottle or a thermos. Settle on a bench facing the Pont. By 7:30 PM, the sun is dropping just behind Villeneuve-lès-Avignon — the Palais stone catches fire, the Pont turns ocher, the bends in the Rhône glitter. Twenty minutes later you head back down via the ramparts for dinner on rue des Teinturiers. It’s our favorite walk in Avignon, one we redo every season.
