Getting around Avignon without a car: bus, bike, walking

📅 June 22, 2026 ⏱ 6 min read ✍️ Damien 🏷 transport · avignon · bus

Avignon’s walled city has a rare advantage: you can do everything on foot, bike or bus without ever getting into a car. The Lavande apartment sits in the Quartier des Teinturiers, a 10-minute walk from Place de l’Horloge, the nerve centre where buses and pedestrian streets converge.

Free TCL buses: handy shuttles

The Transports en Commun du Grand Avignon (TCL) network runs several free lines crossing the centre. Shuttles pass through the Horloge, the TGV station and the ramparts every 15-20 minutes in season. If you arrive by train, two options: walk 15 minutes or take the free line to the Horloge then walk down to the Quartier des Teinturiers. Station-to-centre journey: 8 minutes.

Other useful lines: the link to the free P+R car parks at Île Piot, handy if you’ve consulted our parking guide and chosen to leave the car on the outskirts.

Vélopop: bike-share system

The Vélopop system has about fifteen stations inside the walls. Rate: €1/hour, day pass €5. With the centre being flat, biking is ideal for tracing the ramparts, reaching the Pont d’Avignon or zipping to the Halles market. Nearest Vélopop station: place Carnot, 3 minutes’ walk from the apartment.

Watch out for cobbles on rue des Teinturiers: a bit bumpy but rideable. Stick to the Rhône quays for smoother riding.

Walking: the heart’s best mode

The walled city diameter is 1.5 km: Palais des Papes → pont Saint-Bénézet in 10 minutes, Horloge → Porte de l’Oulle in 8 minutes. The apartment is right in the middle, so everything is quickly accessible. Streets are pedestrian or traffic-calmed.

Walking Avignon means discovering alleys, Renaissance façades, hidden terraces. You take your time, you taste, you wander. Bring comfortable shoes: cobbles and gentle slopes toward the ramparts.

Connecting TGV station and centre

From Avignon Centre TGV station (old intra-muros station), reach the apartment on foot in 15 minutes via boulevard Saint-Roch then rue des Teinturiers. By free bus: line to the Horloge, get off at place Pie then 5 minutes on foot.

From Avignon-Courtine TGV station (extra-muros, Gare Sud), TCRA shuttle every 30 min to the centre (€2, 15 min journey). Or taxi €15-20.

Practical tips

  • Bus timetables: check TCL website for current schedules, reduced service Sundays.
  • Vélopop at night: stations closed after midnight, remember to return before then.
  • Halles market: walkable, open until 1:30pm, closed Mondays.
  • Summer heat: favour morning or late afternoon walks, centre is shaded but stone amplifies heat.
